iPhone 2 (3G) compared to gPhone compared to WordPress?

Thaya Kareeson

I’m sure everybody now knows that the iPhone 2 (3G) is going to be released on July 11th, 2008. I asked a buddy if he would prefer to wait for the gPhone over the iPhone 2 and he humorously responds:

“too unproven”
“too designed by committee”
“like open source”
“don’t want no open source microwave”
“don’t want no open source phone”
“try to make food in open source microwave you find out you need to compile the dependencies for popcorn separately first”

WordPress, being an open-source software, is the most popular blogging platform out there. Why is this? Because it addresses the average Joe’s concerns of open-source software.

1. “too unproven”
WordPress has won many awards (Webware 2008, Webware 2007, Open Source CMS 2007, and more…) for being the best publishing platform.

2. “too designed by committee”
WordPress contains 4 core developers that take patch inputs from a community of developers. As a way, these 4 core developers are the ultimate QA team that performs all code reviews prior to patching any WordPress code.

3. “don’t want no open source microwave”
“don’t want no open source phone”
“try to make food in open source microwave you find out you need to compile the dependencies for popcorn separately first”

This is an easy one. Out of the box, WordPress just works! The interface is easy to use. Themes & plugins are really plug-and-play instead of plug-and-pray.

No wonder people love WordPress so much. For example, some people (which shall remain nameless) love it so much that they dedicate their entire blog to it. Too bad Apple decided to package Six Apart’s TypePad as the native blogging software on the iPhone 2 instead of WordPress.

Do you think there are other concerns of open source software that WordPress address or fails to address? Please share in comments.
