Bacterial Nomenclature

Is described as Genus species (italicized for typing) and underlined for handwriting:

  • Escherichia coli (E. coli) or Escherichia coli (E. coli)
  • Bacillius subtilis (B. subtilis) or Bacillius subtilis (B. subtilis)
  • Entercococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) or Entercococcus faecalis (E. faecalis)

Note that their names can give you an idea of their arrangements:

  • bacillius = rod shaped
  • enterco = inside the gut
  • coccus = sphere shape
  • faecalis = feces aka poop

Different strains of these species may cause diseases.
