Lecture 1 & 2: A glimpse of Microbiology

Linneus used 3 basic principles to describe the unknown organism:

  • Respiration & Nutrition
  • Aerobic (oxygen dependent) or Anaerobic (oxygen independent)
  • Autotrophs (using photosynthesis as a mechanism to get energy from inorganic carbon, such as CO2)
  • Heterotrophs (using organic carbon, such as glucose (containing C-H bonds))
  • Uni or Multicellular
  • Prokaryotes (without nucleus) or Eukaryotes (with nucleus)
