Introduction: What is Copywriting?

Before you make any wild guesses, let us discuss what you understand by copywriting. Is it copying from one website and pasting somewhere else? Of course not. When you made a purchase last time, what were the things that attracted you to make a purchase? Was it the product alone or the description too (or the description alone)?  

You get the idea. There are more than 50 alternatives to everything that you want to buy, but you end up buying products that have a well-written description. That very description that compelled you to proceed with the purchase is called a Copy.  

Copywriting is the art of writing a copy that brings in sales. The copy can be in the form of the landing page, sales page, or even product descriptions.  

Types of Copywriting

Now that you have understood the basic idea of copywriting let us see the different types of Copywriting. Every business needs a copywriter at some point in their life because it is such an important part of any business. Though you can differentiate one form of copywriting from the other, here are the five main types that we think would be sufficient to understand the branching.  

Direct response copywriting:

As the name suggests, this type of copywriting is written to entice the viewers to take the desired action. This form of copywriting will work only if you identify the pain of your target audience. Marketing copywriting is used while crafting:

  • Sales pages
  • Landing pages

Brand copywriting:  

There are millions of brands in the market for all the different purposes and services. So how do you identify your favorite brand when shopping? Let us say we show you ten different logos; if you are a regular shopper, chances are you would recognize 9 out of those ten logos. How does that happen when you recognize the brand name and the services they offer or products they sell? Simple answer, Brand Copywriting. This copywriting creates a connection between your brand and your target audience. The purpose of this is to differentiate your brand from your competitors by conveying your brand mission and vision so that your target audience can identify your brand. This copywriting is used in crafting the ‘About Us ‘ page.  

SEO copywriting:

It would not be wrong to say that SEO Copywriting is the best of both worlds (copywriting and SEO). As an SEO copywriter, you aim to compel your viewers to take the desired action and rank your client’s page in Google Search organically. So basically, you are attracting both your audience and Google. SEO Copywriting is used while creating:

  • Product Descriptions
  • Landing Pages

Technical copywriting:  

This type of copywriting is used when handling a highly competent audience. You can identify the difference between technical copywriting and any other form of copywriting because this uses a specialized language otherwise called jargon. So when you want to create a bond with a target audience specializing in a particular sector, there is a language that those people speak. Technical copywriters know that very well and craft a copy addressing those specialists. This is used while creating:

  • White papers
  • In-depth industry-specific guides

What do Copywriters do?

If you think that copywriting is just about writing a copy of a few hundred words and anyone can do that, maybe you are wrong. Not for the second part but for the first one. There is a lot of work that goes in before the final draft of a copy is submitted. Here is a list of tasks that a copywriter does on a day-to-day basis:  

  • Get on a discovery call with the clients to know more about their expectations
  • Researching on their own to see through the eyes of the audience
  • Craft the first draft
  • Edit the draft
  • Proofreading

How to Become a Copywriter?

You can work as a copywriter at an agency, in-house marketing team, or freelance copywriter. Since you are reading this blog, the chances are that you want to become a freelance copywriter. There are the steps to follow to become a freelance copywriter:

  • Learn the basics of copywriting: there is no limit to the available resources for free on the internet. But, if you don’t want to get drowned in the ocean of resources, you have to be smart enough to pick and choose the resources. Here is one of them to make your work easier.
  • Learn the basics of copywriting skills: let us first see the copywriting skills that are in demand:
  1. Writing a Unique Value Proposition
  2. Writing a headline
  3. Writing a landing page
  4. Writing the sales email
  5. Writing video scripts
  6. Writing advertisement

You don’t have to learn all the above skills. Instead, pick 3-4 of your choice, master them, and you are good to go.  

  • Keep practicing: copywriting is a skill you learn from actually practicing and seeing which copy is working and which is not. Clients will hire you based on your previous work. If you are a complete newbie at copywriting, create samples of either imaginary or existing projects. You may ask how many samples should I create? There is no fixed number, but 3-5 copy samples would be good to go to give an idea. Write samples, get them checked by good copywriters, incorporate the suggestions, and repeat.
  • Get your first client and then regular and retaining clients: you are a beginner and need some clients to start your freelance copywriting career. You may not get paid heavily initially, but that’s alright because you are getting paid to practice. At this beginner stage, you can find clients from job listings and through cold pitching. Once you work with them for about 3-6 months, you may find clients on UpWork and Craigslist. These platforms offer some decent gigs to add to your portfolio.

Tip: To get recurring clients or continuous leads, create channels through which high-ticket clients can reach you. Start a blog that ranks on the first page of Google Search, create an audience on LinkedIn, or even better, start doing guest blogging.  

Is any qualification required to become a Copywriter?

If you have read the previous section thoroughly, you know that you don’t need a qualification to become a Copywriter. However, a Bachelor’s Degree in any stream is recommended to show that you have some formal education. But other than that, only your portfolio, skills, and samples matter.  

How much does a Copywriter make per annum?

There is no fixed number that can tell you how much a copywriter makes per annum. For example, if you are working in an agency, you get a fixed salary month, whereas if you are a freelancer, the sky's the limit of your earnings. But to give you a basic idea about the salary, we have consolidated data from various sources: the average salary was around $48,000 per annum, where 80% of the copywriters earn between $35k-$65k per annum.
